Current state of the war in Afghanistan
October 23, 2018
United States soldiers’ deaths in Afghanistan amount to 2,387 as of July 27, 2018, and the war has no end in sight. With the terror attacks on September 11th, 2001, the United States is determined to stabilize the region and prevent further insurgencies from arising again.
Afghanistan lies about 7,410 miles away from the United States. There are approximately 10,000 American soldiers encamped there, doing all they can to stabilize the region. Obviously, American soldiers are often met with hostility by terrorist groups in the areas they are stationed. However, what’s not obvious is the progress these brave soldiers are risking their lives for. Fighting this conflict continuously for 17 years now has rendered any chance of victory to be very slim.
Senior at Mt. Vernon High School, Cameron McGinnis, 12, stated, “I believe America cannot pull out at this point in the war, as it will only cause more instability.”
Consequently, America has established a no-win situation in the Middle East. They have gone in with valiant motives in their hearts, but nothing will get better until the weak governments overseas can control their citizens.
