The start of the season
April 2, 2018
Mt. Vernon’s girls’ tennis team began their season in early March with an official tryout meeting during spring break.
Team manager, James Cohee, 11, said, “the team is supposed to be really good this year. We already have a really strong varsity and a lot of good prospects for junior varsity.”
Team practicing started on Monday, March 5th although individual practicing starts back in January.
Olivia Spicer, 12, said, “ Our coach changed the schedule a little bit, putting us in a Zionsville Invitational, which will include a lot of good teams from HSE, Fishers, Carmel, Herron, and Cathedral.”
This means competition is even fiercer than last year’s season because of the new division.
“I think we will be able to handle this new competition and am excited for the season overall,” said Betsy McCleery, 12. The seniors on varsity are sad about this being their last year, but are eager to test their skills.
Olivia Spicer, 12, said “It’s the end of something great. There’s a lot of nostalgia that comes with ending this season.”
Last year the girl’s tennis team was strong, going 14-1 in their previous division. All eyes will be on Alaina Nelson and Olivia Spicer who played #1 and #2 last year as they go into the next season with three months of practice under their belt.
Coach Gabe Muterspaugh hopes that with each match the Mt. Vernon’s girls’ tennis team will bring in as many wins as last season.
