No love for Valentine’s Day
February 9, 2017
It is the month of February. The Valentine’s Day decor has been put up. Heart-shaped decorations and cupids are surrounding us.
I do not care for Valentine’s Day and I do not care who knows it. To me it is pushing consumerism masquerading as lovey-dovey gross stuff. I know I sound like a cynic. I just think that if one really loves someone, they should show them every single day, not just some huge gesture on one specific day.
Some restaurants do special set Valentine’s Day meals. These meals are often overpriced and not special. If I was to go out on a date on Valentine’s Day I would want to order anything I personally want to eat. It is not special if my right to choose is taken away.
Candy and stuffed animals become overpriced. I like to buy candy when I go to the store and every once in awhile I see a stuffed animal I want. But around Valentine’s Day one can easily spend about five dollars on a singular bag of nice chocolate that has ten pieces instead of three dollars. It is ridiculous. I do not want to spend that much on candy.
People complain they will be forever alone around Valentine’s Day. It is just one day out of three hundred and sixty-five. It does not matter if someone is not in a relationship on this day. It is alright to be single.
To me the two good things about the holiday are the mediocre romantic comedies that are constantly playing on some channels, and after Valentine’s Day the discounted valentine’s merchandise.
I love mediocre romantic comedies. They make me feel better. Valentine’s season is the perfect time for me to have no shame about this. I can watch this all I want without others judging me.
I grew up learning to shop sales. So when I see a discount, I go for it. After Valentine’s Day these special edition items go on sale. Stores just want them gone so they can move on to the next holiday display. I buy these special edition items, specifically candies, cheap. That is good for me. That is one of the few things enjoyable about this holiday.
Valentine’s Day is okay I guess, but why not show love everyday? I think that love and feelings for others should be celebrated every day in the year. Shower a love with gifts any day to make it special.
