On Jan. 20, President Donald J. Trump was inaugurated into office for his second term as President of the United States. This was a day of immense fear and uncertainty for many, while others were pleased with the outcome of the election.
Since President Trump has been in office, he has begun to propose and enact many rules, restrictions and regulations for the United States. One of them is the reduction of DEI. DEI stands for “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.” The purpose of DEI is to allow women, people of color, disabled people and other minorities an equal chance to have the same jobs and opportunities as white men. In the United States, some business owners will look over these minority groups in hopes of having a company image that they prefer. DEI is there to make sure that this does not happen.
However, in recent weeks, President Trump has made countless promises to eliminate DEI to “better” the United States. His supporters have also given statements on the subject.
Robby Starbuck, a conservative social media activist stated, “The tenets of DEI demand that you discriminate against white people by giving preferential treatment to other races.”
Some people and companies, including Starbucks, may see DEI as reverse discrimination. Even so supporters of DEI point out that DEI does not discriminate against white people because they already have the upper hand when applying for jobs. DEI is giving a boost to historically discriminated against minorities, who have a lot of trouble finding jobs.
DEI was established to make sure that companies could not discriminate against candidates if they have the proper qualifications. Some people may think that under qualified candidates are hired so that companies do not get in trouble for not following DEI rules. However DEI policies still require that all of the candidates are still required to have the same qualifications and skill.
The White House website says that the Biden administration forced illegal and immoral discrimination programs, going by the name ‘diversity, equity and inclusion’ (DEI), into virtually all aspects of the Federal Government, in areas ranging from airline safety to the military.”
The fight against keeping DEI in place might be a long one, however, there are many powerful forces fighting to exonerate it. Whatever happens will be revealed in time. All the United States can do now is wait.
