We are only in the first few months of Donald Trump’s presidency, and he has already drastically changed so much within the federal government. He and his new “Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE),” led by Elon Musk, have fired hundreds and thousands of federal employees and laid waste to several agencies that played significant roles in millions of lives worldwide. There is no denying that there is a ton of governmental bloat when it comes to unnecessary agencies, but the hack-and-slash approach he has to reducing this is doing more harm than good.
Trump is known for his brutal and downright fascist approach to government, and it seems to have worsened in his time out of the oval office. He has established a vice grip on the American public, and it is to the point where a lot of them just blindly follow him, so a large group of people in America believe that what he is doing right now is a good thing.
There is little room for mistakes regarding matters like this and DOGE has already made countless. To list a few examples, Musk fired upwards of 350 workers who manage the nuclear arsenal, cut funds to social security, completely defunded U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and ended the lease on the Weather Service’s DC headquarters. All of these things positively impact everyone inside and outside of America, yet they were cut.
What should be happening right now is: DOGE should send representatives to each agency and investigate whether or not what they are doing is necessary. This could take a while, but had it not been for Trump’s promises to fix the economy starting on day one, there would be no rush. But alas here we are, only 3 months into his second term and we are already on the brink of a recession due to his deregulation and economic policies.
Considering that this is only the beginning of this new presidency, it is safe to presume that the actions being taken right now will be viewed negatively. Because of his economic decisions, we are facing a recession. When thousands of former federal workers are without a job, the unemployment rate and inflation will skyrocket.
