At the Tokyo Motor Show in early February, Mazda revealed their new 2025 RX-Vision concept. Mazada has now reintroduced the rotary engine as a power system that has not been used since the late 90s RX series. Assisted by hybrid batteries powering 2 front shaft electric batteries, the Vision will change how cars are designed.
Rotaries are an older engine style that came with high benefits, yet the lack of technology of the 90s caused multiple problems such as burning oil and a high amount of maintenance that was not fit for most people. Yet, with Mazda’s rotary sustainment and production factory, they have worked to advance the rotary technology and make it as reliable as possible.
The engine setup allows the Vision frame to be set lower to the ground. As the rotary is a compact engine weighing in at only 300 pounds, this allows the car to be not only lightweight, but also heavily aerodynamic. When driving, the front two hybrid batteries power the car at lower speeds, while the rotaries kick in at 40+ MPH, allowing it to not only get better fuel economy, but allows the rotaries, which are extremely fragile at lower speeds, as it burns more oil at those speeds.
Mazda hopes to not only bring back the iconic 90s rotary, but also begin to create a new future for fuel-efficient cars that can be cheap to produce and reliable.
