Groundhog Day is a holiday that is celebrated in the United States and Canada every year on February 2nd. It is celebrated by taking a groundhog and, if that groundhog sees its shadow, that means that winter will last six more weeks. If not, it is said that Spring will arrive early.
Although the holiday has been celebrated for over 100 years, some people disagree with the holiday for a few reasons.
One of these reasons is that the holiday is simply a superstition. People opposed to the holiday believe that whether or not the groundhog sees its shadow, does not have any actual scientific proof.
Opposers say that not only does the holiday spread false information, but it is also a cruel holiday. When people celebrate this day with an actual groundhog, opponents say that it is cruel to put the animal in these stressful and chaotic situations. It poses a risk to both people and animals because the animal may react violently to the stressful situation.
The next Groundhog Day will be on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026.
