“Heart Eyes” was released in theaters on February 7, 2025, and stars Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding as its main characters, Ally and Jay, respectively. The film follows a serial killer known only as “Heart Eyes,” who, for the past few years, has been murdering couples on Valentine’s Day.
What stuck out to me the most about “Heart Eyes” is its unique sense of humor. It seemed to me like the movie was a satirical take on slasher films. I would categorize it as a dark comedy. There were a lot of times during the movie that I laughed out loud.
The film also did a great job of drawing the viewer into the story, which follows the two main characters who have been involved in a ploy to make an ex lover jealous, are mistaken as a couple by a serial killer. I genuinely enjoyed Olivia Holt’s character, Ally, and was invested in what would happen to her. She was quite witty and realistic and that was a breath of fresh air for me from the romcom nature of the film. I did not particularly enjoy the reveal of the killer and found the whole thing to be strange, but I will not spoil that.
The film holds up well as a comedy, but not so much as a horror film. It was a really funny movie, poking fun at common slasher tropes. However, the gore was nothing special. There were a few notable deaths, though, and I do find the antagonist’s design cool. Overall, I would give “Heart Eyes” a solid eight out of ten. I would recommend it as a comedy slasher film.
