After the first “Minecraft” trailer, the “Minecraft” community did not think that it could get worse. They asked for a better-looking movie and Mojang, the developer of “Minecraft,” delivered. The second trailer promises the “Minecraft” movie to be a movie worth watching.
The movie first starts with a young boy named Steve walking up to a mine opening. Steve is the default character players start off with in “Minecraft.” Older Steve, played by Jack Black, narrates the trailer, saying, “When I was young, I longed for the mines.” This is based on a tweet that was posted by Twitter user “Froggenthusias1” stating “‘Minecraft’ proves that abolishing child labor was a mistake. The children yearn for the mines.” The young Steve is quickly chased by an older man because kids are not allowed in mines, as a nearby sign says.
The scene changes to Steve heading into the mines once he is finally old enough. He finds a tesseract-looking object and puts it in a clear box that has enchantment table language all over the sides. After a flash and the closing of the blue portal from the first trailer, he is thrown into the “Minecraft” world.
Steve shows off a few skills, like being able to build structures out of dirt and even taming a wolf. The wolf’s eyes change from red to black and a red collar appears over its neck, just like in the game. This is so cute and a great detail. Steve’s building of dirt is also a good detail, showing an average player’s first night in their world of “Minecraft.”
The scene changes to a group of four people getting thrown out of the portal. The main character, Henry, is holding the same tesseract-looking object that Steve was. The audience later learns the names of the other characters: Garrett, Dawn, and Natalie.
Throughout the rest of the trailer, there are many cool references to things found in “Minecraft,” such as minecarts, which are surprisingly really fast unlike the ones in the game currently, and a chicken killing machine that cooks chicken with lava in a village the characters explore. The peace is quickly ruined as “dark forces” from the nether come and try to destroy the village. The nether mobs are a reference to “Minecraft Legends.”
Near the end of the trailer, Steve shows Henry a bookshelf of many different items to help fight against the piglins such as golden carrots, a turtle helmet, fireworks, an enchanted diamond sword, TNT, and a pair of boots with little wings to show that the boots are enchanted with feather falling.
Lastly, some cool things that looked good in the trailer are the iron golem, the ore blocks, a spider jockey, where a skeleton rides on top of a spider and the wandering traders and villagers found in the background of the trailer.
Although it looked amazing and so much better than the original trailer, there were a couple of things that stood out as confusing. One of those things is a gun that both Garrett and Henry have that is not originally from the game. After some quick research, the gun could possibly be made by Henry, since he represents modding in “Minecraft.” This can possibly also explain the buckets chained together by Garrett in the first trailer.
The other confusing things are just a few petty complaints, like there being more than one pink sheep together in the background when it is pretty much impossible for that to happen in the game. Another thing that is confusing about the trailer is elytra being in the movie, when Steve would have had to visit the Nether before even getting into the End, where elytra originates from. The fire arrows shot by the skeletons at the end of the trailer are confusing as well since skeletons do not shoot those types of arrows and those arrows can only be made if an arrow is going through a fire source, like fire or lava.
Overall, the movie looks spectacular and the small details are just perfect. The trailer even has some corny moments, like Dawn talking about how the nighttime felt “quick” since the daytime cycle in the game is twenty minutes and feels fast when a player is lost in creating their world.
Before the trailer was released, some famous “Minecraft” YouTubers flew over to New Zealand to check out the set. The YouTubers included Aphmau, LDShadowlady, Mumbo Jumbo, and DanTDM. Each said the set greatly impressed them and that it was breathtaking. Hopefully, Mojang can keep up the great work. The only way to find out is to watch the “Minecraft” movie when it releases in theaters in April.
