Mike Tyson, 58-year-old boxing legend, entered the ring for the second time in twenty years to fight 27-year-old YouTuber turned boxer, Jake Paul. Some doctors, however, are concerned about the health of “Iron” Mike.
Boxing is one of the few sports where the entire goal is to hit one’s opponent in the head. Sethi, a ringside physician, explained that multiple hits in the head can add up to cause chronic neurological issues. He explains that fighters often do not realize the symptoms arising from the blows to their head until they are no longer in the ring. Tyson being nearly 60 increases the probability of an extreme neurological injury.
The common cut-off age for boxers is 40 because after that age the probability of injuries increases and the ability to handle concussions decreases. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations said that boxers over 35 must submit electroencephalogram or electrocardiogram tests to confirm their ability to safely perform the fight.
Tyson and Paul lasted eight two minute rounds during the sold-out fight. The Tyson-Paul fight only brought up more concerns for Tyson’s health.
