Dustin Kjersen was murdered while camping in Montana on October 10, 2024. He was a father son, and a person his community loved. The people did not know him as “Dustin” but as “Little Dude” along with other names. He was supposed to take his girlfriend camping on October 12 after she finished work.
Kjersen went to the campsite a day before to set up his camping equipment in Moose Creek. The creek is a well-known hunting spot in the small town, yet many people do not go because of the dangers. When Kjersen did not pick up his girlfriend’s calls, she became worried, though she did not report it to the police until the next day
The cops found Kejersen’s body in his tent with multiple chop-like wounds. At first, the police believed it was just a freak bear attack that killed Kjersen. However, locals in the community and experts said that it was not a bear attack and that a man killed him.
Things were taken from Kjersen’s campsite. An ax and cooler were a few of the things taken from the crime scene. However, the police were able to find one thing, an empty beer can. They took the can and ran a DNA test on it. The result was that an individual named Daven Abby was at Kjersen’s campsite.
On October 26, the police questioned Abby as a suspect, asking why he was at the campsite. Abby admitted to murdering Kejersen. His story was that Kjersen was at his campsite and he offered him a beer to chat, and when his dog’s muddy paws got on Kjersen’s air mattresses, Abby said Kjersen threatened to kill his dog
Abby alleges he murdered Kjersen by hitting him with a plank of wood, taking a screwdriver to his neck, and killing him with his ax. He then went back to the campsite to gather his things so that no evidence was left behind. Abby told the police that killed Kjersen in self-defense even though Abby had no wounds that showed a struggle.
The police were quick to arrest Daven Abby and put him in the Butte Detention Center until his court hearing. In the past, Abby was arrested four times for driving while under the influence, and on November 1, he was charged with deliberate homicide and two charges of tampering with evidence
The police are still trying to find a motive or a reason why Abby would kill Kjersen. The two never met before October 10 and they only had a small talk with each other.
