“Melodrama” is an album created by the New Zealand native singer-songwriter who goes by the name Lorde. It was released on June 16th, 2017 by Republic Records. It is categorized in the music genre named “electropop.”
The very unique album has won many awards, including Album of the Year for the Grammys, the NME Award for Best Album, and the ARIA Music Award for Best International Artist.
This album portrays how Lorde sees the world while going through a breakup, showing her level of maturity. The lead single “Green Light” really sets the bar for the album by giving off the vibe of the rest of the project but also showing its lyricism. The lyricism in the album is also unique. Lorde is not just directly saying things to someone or speaking about something. She uses strong lyrics in order to show what she is trying to say and clearly gets her point across to her audience.
The mix of instruments used in the songs is diverse. The instrumentation includes guitars, pianos, drums, and more. The way the beats come together and the way the songs are composed allowed me to experience a wide range of emotions such as heartbreak, happiness, and nostalgia.
My favorite song on this album is “Writer in the Dark.” This is a showcase of Lorde’s wide range of vocals and style of music. It is a ballad and is one of the first true ballads on the album and on Lorde’s discography.
This album’s wide variety of sounds leaves the mind with very interesting feelings and thoughts. It is definitely a show-stopping album that is worth listening to and giving a try. I would give this album 5/5 stars due to the very extravagant and diverse tracks.
