However, in April 2024, girls wrestling is finally an officially sanctioned sport.

Mt. Vernon High School has had several female wrestlers over the years, however, their team has always been a part of the boys’ wrestling team. For the 2024-2025 school year, Mt. Vernon has its first official team for the girls, with Coach Hayes as the head coach.
Girls wrestling has a variety of different weight classes that girls can compete in, going from 100 lbs to 245 lbs. The Mt. Vernon girls team is small as of now, as they only have 5 members, and the coaches are hoping to fill out the ranks.
Wrestling is a good sport to get into if one enjoys physical activity, as it conditions the whole body. Practice can be intense, but it improves one’s overall physical fitness. Wrestling is also a relatively affordable sport to get into, as an individual really only needs the shoes and a singlet to get started.
Overall, wrestling is a sport that centers on teamwork. Now, girls get a chance to compete in it. The chance for girls to finally compete in championships is finally here.
