The student government at Mt. Vernon High School does a lot for the school. Dances, fundraisers, pep rallies and more are hosted by members of the student government. However, the student government election process at MVHS is somewhat different than other high schools.
There are some similarities between student government in other Indiana high schools and student government at Mt. Vernon. One similarity is that the student body chooses who is the class president. Another similarity is that students are only able to vote for the officers and representatives for their classes.
However, even though there are similarities between student governments at other high schools in Indiana and at Mt. Vernon, there are still some differences. To run for student government they must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, pass all classes the prior semester, fill out an online application, get 3 teacher evaluations and 50 peer signatures from people in their class. To become an officer, students have to have been part of student government for a year.
Student government is held at the end of the year. This could cause problems if new students wanted to run for a position in the government for the year, but they would have to wait until next year to be part of it.
Although this way is different, this is a way to have a successful student government. Having the elections at the end of the school year could lead to all of the students knowing who was running so that when the ballot comes out they have a better idea of who they want to vote for. Allowing only people who are recommended also could eliminate the people who would just mess around and do not really care about what happens to students.
The student government is a very helpful and good addition to the school. Everyone enjoys being able to participate in the fun activities and events that they have to offer.
