From the 24th to the 28th of September 2024, a hurricane went through multiple states in the U.S. This category-4 hurricane, named Helene, passed through Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas. The state that was impacted the most was North Carolina. The hurricane destroyed homes, businesses, and roads. It also caused major flooding throughout North Carolina. As of October 2, 2024, there have been one hundred and ninety confirmed deaths and hundreds of people deemed missing.
The town of Asheville, North Carolina was impacted the most. It was flooded and the people of the town did not have any means of evacuation. Their power and service have been out for more than two weeks. Due to this, soldiers from the National Guard, the Army, and Fort Liberty have been sent out to help the people of Asheville and others in surrounding states.
National Guard soldiers from Indiana have been sent out to help with relief from the natural disaster. According to the National Guard, over one hundred thousand pounds of food, water, and other supplies have been given to the victims of the hurricane.
President Joe Biden has also stepped in to help Helene’s victims. He visited North Carolina on October 2nd and directed over a thousand soldiers to help people affected by the storm. Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump both visited Georgia to discuss the federal response to Hurricane Helene.
Charities and non-profit organizations are accepting donations to help the victims of the disaster. NBC news stated that the American Red Cross is taking donations to support shelters for people who have evacuated their homes, the Salvation Army is accepting donations to help provide relief, food service, and emotional support to victims and Americares is accepting donations to deliver medicines and relief supplies.
