Students have different opinions about the school dress code. Some think it is necessary for students’ futures, as businesses often have their employees dress a certain way. However, others disagree with the dress code, as they think students are children. They should be able to enjoy being kids without restrictions. Students’ opinions often do not hold much power, as it is up to administrators, like Mrs. Glaze, an assistant principal at Mt. Vernon High School, to enforce dress codes
Mrs. Glaze finds everything right with the current Mt. Vernon dress code. While changes have been made since she arrived, she said those changes made “were required by law.”
Most schools have a dress code to avoid a student’s dressing inappropriately. Other schools claim they have a dress code so students will focus on their studies and not how they appear for the day. Indianapolis public schools have incorporated uniforms into their dress codes. Mrs. Glaze doesn’t think MVHS should have a uniform as she “believes that students should be able to express themselves”
MVHS does have a dress code regardless of what others think, if someone violates it, Mrs. Glaze is in charge of discipline. She explained that if students keep breaking the dress code “They must take the clothing off, but if it becomes a problem many times, then further consequences will be enforced”
Some students believe that the dress code is targeted towards groups of people, for example, how girls must cover their shoulders or boys must not let their pants sag. Mrs. Glaze explained that the dress code has been changed to be more inclusive over the years. Changes were made so students’ clothing now must only cover their shoulders, torso, and thighs.
Even with the dress code being more open, some students are still not okay with the rules. As long as there are dress codes, there will be those who fight against them
