On March 14, 2024, fourteen year old Carly Madison Gregg shot and killed her forty year old mother, Ashley Smylie. Gregg was seen on footage walking into her mother’s room before firing three shots which killed her
The motivation of the shooting was determined by the collected evidence to be as a result of Gregg’s vaping problems. Her mother found her stash of vapes and threatened to punish her.
Soon after the shooting, Gregg called her friend over and asked her if she had seen a dead body before. The two of them were captured on camera observing Smylie’s body before disappearing off frame.
After the first shooting, Carly went on to shoot her stepfather, Heath Smylie, by luring him home with the pretense that there was an emergency at the house. Smylie arrived home and the second shooting then occurred.
He survived the shooting and called the police from inside the home. Gregg was arrested at the house and taken into custody.
The trial was held on September 20, 2024. During the trial, Heath Smylie testified against Gregg and used home security footage from inside the house to make his case. The Ring camera captured the shootings and helped bring a decisive verdict of guilty. The defense tried to plead that the act was done in a state of psychosis and that the sentencing should be lighter because of this.
The jury did not agree as Carly Gregg was sentenced to life in prison for first degree murder and another ten years for tampering with evidence. Now, at the age of fifteen years old, she will spend the rest of her entire life in prison without parole.
