With the “Mario” movie and the “Borderlands” movie releasing within the last year, companies seem to be cashing in on video game movies. Warner Bros. Pictures has just released a teaser trailer for their upcoming live-action “Minecraft” movie. “Minecraft” is the best selling video game of all time. Therefore, a movie about the game should be amazing, no?
Well, reviews of the trailer have not exactly been stellar. While the video itself has garnered over 600,000 likes and 32,000,000 views on YouTube within less than a week, there have been multitudes of fans saying that they are disappointed in Warner Bros. for going for a live-action take on the hit game, which is very much defined by its signature graphical style of using cubes. The video release on YouTube has a one-to-two like to dislike ratio, showing that the community is hesitant to accept what they have been given.
The main character of “Minecraft,” Steve, is being played by Jack Black. The common claim is that “Jack Black is playing himself in a blue shirt.” People are also getting annoyed at how many appearances he has had in video game adaptations. The main characters do not seem to be recognizable from the game, so the probable story is similar to “Jumanji” in which people get sucked into a game by mysterious means.
Not all the reception of this teaser has been negative, though. Many fans simply want to see the potential in a movie based on a game that allows for limitless possibilities. Warner Bros. also seems to be going for a story similar to the game “Minecraft Legends,” a game that some may not be familiar with.
The game revolves around the piglin species, a Nether mob, invading the Overworld. In this game, the player must work together with various Overworld mobs to fight back the piglin menaces. The teaser itself is very short, however, so there may still be time to change some of the less popular aspects being shown like the awkward and uncanny animal faces.
Additionally, various fan recreations of this trailer have popped up just a few days after releasing which have already amassed a large number of supporters. They follow the original art style of the game and have far less work put into them, but the community still largely recognizes them as what the movie could have been.
While the final movie may still be a live action film, the current reception has not been kind.
