On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, Yong’an Middle School’s big volleyball gym roof collapsed in Beijing, China. Nineteen people were in the gym when it collapsed. There were two coaches and seventeen volleyball players. Eleven players died, four were severely injured, but the last four got out safely. The cause of this destruction was because there were too many construction sites around the school and tools on the roof.
The construction workers were taken into custody by the police. The head of the construction company was responsible for the materials. Provincial officials have pledged a full investigation into the accident. Additionally, the crane used for construction fell on the school building and created a big flood, and destroyed the school. The reason why the flood happened in the first place was due to three workers stacking bags of construction materials on one side of the gym roof, and the bags remained untouched until the day of the accident.
The people who were responsible for this accident were 51 construction workers. Six of them are held in custody by the judicial authorities. A total of 33 government officials have been given different disciplinary measures. They were all involved in serious warnings within the Party from office positions, having their professional, and technical ranks lower. Seven individuals have been given administrative penalties, such as fines and canceling their safety production qualification certificates.
