On Sunday, July 21, President Biden announced that he would end his reelection campaign. He followed this announcement by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the new nominee.
In a post on X, Biden said, “While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
This decision followed Biden’s performance in the presidential debate in June. After the debate, many members of the Democratic party began to discuss the possibility of Biden being replaced on the ballot out of fear of losing the election to former president, Donald Trump.
Biden’s decision came only a month before the Democratic Convention leaving American voters in uncharted territory. Presidential studies professor at the University of Virginia, Barbara Perry, told NBC, “We’re in uncharted waters. No president has dropped out or died this close to the convention.”
Harris will now be taking on the Democratic Party with Walz as her vice presidential candidate.
