On Saturday, April 27, Mt. Vernon’s Wind Ensemble participated in(Indiana State School Music Association’s state qualifier competition at Warren Central High School’s Performing Arts Center. They played movements one, two and four of “Second Suite in F for Military Band” by Gustav Holst, “One Life Beautiful” by Julie Giroux and “The Klaxon” by Henry Fillmore for two judges and the audience.
They were then taken to a private room and judged on their sight reading, which evaluates how well groups can play a new piece of music. They had ten minutes to review the new piece and then play it.
Only the highest scoring 16 concert bands in the state make it to finals. Although Mt. Vernon’s Wind Ensemble was not in the top 16, they were fairly close, placing in the top 20. They also received the top rating available for their playing, gaining Gold with Distinction for their concert band music and Gold for sight reading, which does not have the distinction rating available.
