Andres Langston is a senior at Mt. Vernon High School who is also part of the varsity track team. Langston has broken multiple school records in track and field, including the records for the 400-meter dash, high jump, 300-meter hurdle and the four by four relay.
Langston started track in sixth grade and did track for two years in middle school until COVID hit during his eighth grade year. He joined the track team his freshman year and struggled with being a year behind due to quarantine. During his first year on the track team, he went to state and competed in the four by four relay and high jump. The team placed sixth overall.
In sophomore year, Langston broke his first school record: the 400-meter dash. He beat the previous score by less than a second, and he and his fellow runners also beat the school record in the four by four relay and scored third overall that year.
Langston continued to improve in his junior year, breaking the school record for the indoor high jump by two inches when he cleared 6 feet and 5 inches during the indoor season. His jump also broke the previous outdoor season record. He also broke the 400 meter dash record again, and the record for the 400 meter open dash at the competition. He held the previous record for both. His team broke the school record again for the four by four relay too, which they had broken the year before. The team placed fourth overall.
After a successful junior year, Langston was offered multiple opportunities over the summer and he took many of them. He participated on the Indiana All Star Team where he specialized in the 400 meter dash. After that, he qualified for the New Balance Nationals for the 400 meter dash in the highest division. He also qualified for the four by four relay at Nationals.
Langston, who is currently in his senior year at Mt. Vernon, is still competing and continuing to break records. In the 60 meter hurdles, he got a new personal best of 8.33 seconds which allowed him to qualify for the Nike Indoor Nationals. He did the 60 meter hurdles, 400 meter dash and four by four relay.
The track team season is currently in the outdoor season and Langston is currently focusing on his hurdles. He broke the record for the 300 meter hurdle by nearly a second and beat the current number one hurdle runner in state during the state competition.
Langston hopes to continue to excel in his hurdles and all his accomplishments and broken records have made him number two in the state of Indiana. Langston talked about his struggles and how he continues to better himself.
He said, “I know my ability and I know what I am capable of. I know that everybody does not have perfect days.¨
Langston plans to go to Duke University, where he hopes to continue to compete in track and field as a D-One athlete.
