“Hazbin Hotel” is an 18+ musical cartoon that is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video. The show is rated 16+ for all of the episodes except episode four which is rated 18+. Amazon Prime video takes the highest rating to make sure viewers know the audience it is intended for. It follows the princess of hell, Charlie, as she tries to redeem souls so they can get to heaven. She does this so they can escape the extermination, an event where angels kill a certain percent of demons, which happens every year.
After watching “Hazbin Hotel” the songs have been on a loop in real life and in my head all day, every day. I have been a fan since the pilot and was extremely happy once the show finally came out after five years. It completely blew my mind, and made me feel like I was back in 2019 watching the pilot for the first time.
There are eight episodes which average 30 minutes each. It only takes four hours to watch all of the episodes. The fourth episode does include a sensitive topic, being the only episode in the season with an 18+ rating, which may deter viewers from the show. The scene consists of Angel and Valentino entering Angel’s dressing room after Charlie tried to get Angel out of work for the day. Valentino is Angel’s boss. In the dressing room, Valentino proceeded to sexually harass Angel. It is an extremely emotional scene to watch.
One of the only things I do not like in the show is a major time skip that takes place, as it is very jarring. The season takes place over six months. That is one of the bad things about the show since I would have liked more in-depth episodes. There is so much jammed into one season and too many things happening at once. For example, episode one starts with the extermination being a year away and ends with it being only 6 months away. The show ended up handling this well. The songs help set the timeline for how fast events move along.
Most of the characters are likable in their own ways. They all have good character development throughout the show, and are relatable and reasonable despite being demons. Some of the scenes where I felt like I could understand both sides are when Sir Pentious got caught with the hidden camera by Angel Dust during episode two, when Angel runs away from the hotel after getting into an argument with Husker during episode four, and when Charlie yelled at Susan while making a speech during episode seven after Susan was making comments out loud. Each character has their own troubles and advantages. Viewers can most definitely relate to at least some aspect of a character.
Overall, “Hazbin Hotel” is an amazing show and is worth watching due to having a good storyline, relatable characters, and the great songs.
