Tally Hall is a band that started in 2002 and disbanded in 2011, only coming back in 2019 to cover “Just a Friend” by Biz Markie. The members consisted of guitarists Rob Cantor and Joe Hawley, bassist Zubin Sedghi, pianist/keyboardist Andrew Horowitz and drummer Ross Federman. Together they released many songs, with being from two albums; the first album was “Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum” and the other was “Good & Evil.”
Today I will be ranking the songs from “Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum,” with tiers ranging from “I would not listen to this if someone forced me to” to “If I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, it would be this one.”
- “Dream” (MMMM Bonus Track)
Dream was used as background music for the Tally Hall Internet Show, and it really shows. I do not enjoy listening to it and always remove it from the queue when listening to the entire album.
- “Spring and a Storm” (MMMM)
While this song is good musically, my Christian beliefs about life do not allow me to relate with the atheistic view of this song.
- “Two Wuv” (MMMM)
I see why some would love this song, but I would not listen to it a lot.
- “Hidden in the Sand” (MMMM)
Despite popular opinion, I do not like this song. I admit it is great musically and really feel-good, but I do not enjoy listening to it, as the beginning and end are too long to be worth it.
- “Mucka Blucka” (MMMM Bonus Track)
A joke song sung by Ross. That is pretty much it. I do not really ever listen to it, but when I do, it is very fun to attempt to sing along to.
- “Be Born” (MMMM)
When I first listened to this song, I did not like it. But as I listened to it more, it started to grow on me. It has a good instrumental and vocals, especially the bridge.
- “Just Apathy” (MMMM)
Similar to the song “Be Born,” but I like this song just a bit more.
- “Good Day” (MMMM)
Not my favorite song, but still really good musically. The only reason I listen to it as much as I do is because it adds more to the song “Greener” when listening to both back to back.
- “Taken For a Ride” (MMMM)
A not-so-simple song about what fans believe to be depression that I would listen to on a regular basis. Bonus points for not requiring the pickup from “Welcome to Tally Hall.”
- “Greener” (MMMM)
I LOVE this song. It is one of the best, musically, in the album. The only downside is that one has to listen to “Good Day” right before it to get the full experience.
- “The Whole World and You” (MMMM)
One of the shortest, yet most feel-good, songs in the album sung by Andrew.
- “Welcome to Tally Hall” (MMMM)
Another song I absolutely love. It perfectly introduces Tally Hall to anybody who does not already know the group.
- “Haiku” (MMMM)
A chill song about a guy trying to make a haiku for the one he loves, and, just as he is in love with that person, I am in love with this song.
- “13 + Ruler of Everything” (MMMM)
Since nobody really counts 13 as its own song, as it is more of just a prelude to Ruler of Everything, I am combining the two in this tier list. It is one of my favorites from Marvin’s. Not the best of them all, but very close.
- “Banana Man” (MMMM)
This is the song that introduced me to Tally Hall. This song is absolutely amazing, which is typical for songs composed by Joe Hawley. It would be first, but there is no way I could disrespect the next song so much as to not have it as my top.
- “The Bidding” (MMMM)
The Bidding is more than a song. It is a story about men desperate enough for either love or money to auction themselves off, told through glorious music. I immediately fell in love with it the first time I listened to it. From the lyrics to the instrumental to even the simple humming in between verses, this song rightfully deserves the number one spot in this ranking.
