On January 9, MatPat released a video titled “Goodbye Internet” stating that on March 9, he will host his last videos for his Game, Film, Food and Style Theory channels, and then pass the channels on to the creative leads for each channel. When this news hit, multiple people made emotional videos, live streams and posts about the situation. Many talked about how MatPat was a part of their childhood, whether it be ruining their perception of an entire character, solving the lore of FNAF or even trying to prove that Sans from Undertale is Ness from Earthbound, he had an impact on them.
In MatPat’s video, he outlines his reasons for stepping down. At first he jokes that his reasoning is because Tom Scott slowed down video production, and this is followed by his first real reason for leaving. His first real reason is that he wants to not be thinking about work all the time and that he would honestly rather spend time with his family. He uses the example that whenever he would sit down to play video games with his family, all he would think about is “What theories could come from this?” His next reason coincides with the first: he wants to spend more time with his son, Ollie. The final reason given to the audience in the video is that both the internet and his life are changing.
The next segment in MatPat’s video was dedicated to him talking about how proud he is in what he has done and the community he has grown. He also embraces the fact that his signature outro is a meme for about the millionth time, while also showing viewers a short montage of different youtubers saying some variation of “But that’s just a theory. A game theory!”
Finally, MatPat tells the audience who is next as hosts of the theory channels. He reveals that Lee, who has been working with him for ten years, will be taking over Film Theory. Amy is taking over Style Theory. Food Theory will be going over to Santi. Finally, Game Theory is going over to Tom.
