Penelope Dearth is a senior who has quite the track record when it comes to engaging in her community, from tech crew to the English Academic Team, to the Asian Student Union. She hopes to continue her path of helping others and learning new things into adulthood with the plans of being an English or history teacher. She got a silver medal at this year’s state Spell Bowl competition because she only missed one point in the competition.
Penelope first joined the Spell Bowl team her sophomore year. At the time it only consisted of one other girl, who was a senior. All three years Penelope has been a part of the team she has managed to advance to Perfect Competition, which is an extra competition that is available to those who spell all of the given words correctly. This year though, Penelope placed better than she could have expected because she earned a total of 104 points out of 105 in the Perfect Competition.
Since the day Penelope joined the Spell Bowl team she has put her all into being a reliable part of the team, which is why she has become the team captain this year. When looking back on the team she first joined and the one she will be leaving now, she stated, “when I joined my sophomore year, the team was only me and one other girl, who graduated that year. Now the team has nearly twenty people on it, so I am happy more people will continue spelling after I have graduated.”
