The Mount Vernon Snow Whirl dance is an annual dance put on by Mt. Vernon’s music department. This year’s dance was held on the ninth of December. Music, food and fun filled the room. The dance, held in the auxiliary gym, was from 8 PM to 11 PM, but students were allowed to leave whenever they wanted.
The staff set the dance up the night before; hanging loose white cloth above the railings of the upper floor, lighting up the room with DJ lights and providing snacks and drinks.
Like prom, there were king and queen candidates, who were voted on and crowned at the dance. While everyone stood onstage with their dates, Katie Bowsher and Owen Tricker were voted as queen and king at the end of the night.
Many song favorites were played and danced to. Songs such as “Shut Up & Dance” by Walk the Moon, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Witney Huston and “About Damn Time” by Lizzo were sung by everyone as they danced in the gym. “Cotton-Eye Joe” by Rednex and “Cupid Shuffle” by Bryson Bernard started playing, keeping everyone up and dancing. Although it was wild sometimes, there were some calm and romantic songs that played as well, such as Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect” and Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
“It was pretty cool for my first time. The music had the standard dances and the fact they had slow music was awesome. Overall, everyone looked beautiful,” said freshman Kathrine Lawrenece.
“Snow whirl was a lot of fun even though it was not as big in numbers years before. I was very surprised and felt honored to win Snow Whirl queen,” said senior, and Snow Whirl Queen, Kathrine Bowsher.
