Color has the power to evoke emotions. It can make people feel anger, sadness, happiness, and even joy. However, when glancing around the halls of Mt. Vernon High School, it is very easy to see its lack of color. One teacher, in particular, noticed this issue and wanted to bring a spark of color into the school’s halls.

Mrs. Evans, one of Mt. Vernon’s art teachers and National Art Honors Society leader, started the mural project because she, “felt like the hallways could use more color and look more inviting.”

Mrs. Evans began to take action on this plan over the high school’s fall break. She asked the members of the National Art Honors Society to come in and volunteer to help. After two work days, the murals were lined with tape and began to get covered in color. However, there were still many areas without paint.

Mrs. Evans said that she hopes people will appreciate the murals, but “I think the people who are a part of the process will appreciate them the most.”

Currently, there are two murals being developed. One mural is in the alcove outside Mrs. Evans’s room. The other is in another alcove between Mr. Wheeler’s and Mr. Green’s rooms. These areas are considered Mt. Vernon’s art department.

Mrs. Evans explained that “I want to do the art department alcoves first, and then, eventually the idea will be open to other teachers.”

Her goal is to create beautiful murals all around the school for all to visually enjoy. In addition to that idea, Mrs. Evans wants to create murals with the same color schemes under the same departments, so students will be able to better tell the departments apart.

While the members of the National Art Honors Society are the only ones currently working on the murals, Mrs. Evans is open to having anyone with previous art classes come and help out. Students are also welcome to come to talk to Mrs. Evans about joining the National Art Honors Society anytime. NAHS is always looking for new members.

Do not wait, come paint.
