Boxed desserts have changed the dessert game, allowing people to make desserts such as cookies, cakes, and brownies in only a few easy steps. They do not require any advanced baking skills and usually require limited ingredients. These boxed desserts’

rise to popularity was inevitable. However, many wonder about the age-old question about these desserts: Are they actually any good? I sought to test one of the most popular boxed dessert brands: Betty Crocker.
During my test, I wanted not only to determine if the desserts were in fact as delicious as they were advertised to be, but also which boxed dessert was the best. I tested two basic boxed desserts, as well as a premium one.
Almost everyone has made a boxed cake or brownie mix at least once in their lives. These two desserts are somewhat boxed dessert classics. Both desserts were priced the same, coming out to be $1.79 each. I purchased the Super Moist French Vanilla Cake Mix and the classic Fudge Brownie Mix. Each dessert only requires the baker to add water, oil, and eggs. After the desserts were mixed they both baked for around half an hour. The brownies came out cooked to perfection, while the cake was a bit overbaked.
When it came to the more premium boxed dessert the directions were just as easy. I purchased the Peanut Butter Fudge Cookie Cups. This box totaled out to be $4.49. The increased price is due to the fact that this boxed dessert includes the cookie mix, filling, sprinkle topping, and paper baking cups. The baking process was just as easy as it was for the two simpler boxed desserts. It only requires the baker to mix in butter and water, and then bake for twelve minutes. After the cookies cool, the baker is instructed to make a well for the fudge and then top the cookie with the sprinkle topping. I had no trouble during this process.
When it came down to actually evaluating which dessert was the best, I had to get others help to taste test. The favorite dessert was definitely the classic Fudge Brownie Mix.
Julie Nicklin, a Mt. Vernon high school senior said, “They had a rich chocolate taste and they were perfectly chewy.”
While the other desserts were still good, it is very hard to beat the sweet taste of gooey chocolate brownies.
Ethan Murphy, another Mt. Vernon senior said, “They were rather rich, a little creamy, not too firm.”
The sweet taste and soft texture makes these brownies the most desirable. On top of that, they are just as easy to make as the other two desserts and cost less than the premium boxed desserts.
Save the money and go for the classics, they are a fan favorite every time.
