Since March 4th, when the first article about Ukraine appeared in the MV Current, a lot has changed between Ukraine and Russia. Most importantly, the war is still raging in Europe.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), since the beginning of the invasion, at least 957 civilians have been killed and at least 1,594 civilians have been injured. This does not even include the number of soldiers who have perished. 

According to NATO, an estimated 7,000 to 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed.

None of these numbers are exact, and a lot of the details are blurry. The actual numbers will not be known for a long time as it is hard to obtain the actual numbers, due to the difficulty of access to regions where conflict has occurred.

In Ukraine, however, citizens are facing a new normal. Bombings have hit all over the country. From cities in the West like Lviv, all the way to the Eastern cities along the coast like Mariupol. Although, along with the bombings across Ukraine, there has been intense gunfights as well.

Despite the raging war, Russia has struggled to make large amounts of progress into the mainland. Peace talks have also continued, but to no avail.

President Joe Biden just returned home from a trip to Europe where he delivered remarks in Warsaw, Poland that Russian President Vladimir Putin “cannot remain in power.” The purpose of the trip to Europe was to rally global democracies. 

Shortly after President Biden’s return, Russia announced troop reductions in the attack on the Ukranian capital Kyiv. 

For now all that can be done is to wait and see what happens next as the peace negotiations continue.
