Rex Orange County “Pony” Review

Gabe Thomas, Staff Writer

Rex Orange County, the golden boy of bedroom pop, returns with his third studio album “Pony,” after a big 2017 where the then-unknown Rex was discovered by Tyler, the Creator, and recruited to be a feature on his 2017 album “Flower Boy” which boosted his popularity. This collaboration catapulted Rex to mainstream stardom and a record deal with Sony. His first mainstream album is good, but it does not have the same charm as the previously released independent albums.

The good things about this album are the production and lyrical matter of the songs. Rex is known for these two aspects, so it is nice to see him expand on the topics.

A standout out track on “Pony” is “Pluto Projector.” This song involves Rex singing about how he does not think he is able to understand the way he is feeling. The part of the song that is great is the string section near the end. This puts a cherry on top of the song as it is a beautiful section.

Something that seemed off about this album is the sound. Personally, I liked Rex when he was unknown and the new sound he uses to impress a mainstream audience does not feel like the Rex Orange County of the past.

Other than that, it is an enjoyable album, but I would recommend listening to his previous album “Apricot Princess,” if you want to hear something better.

Overall:6.8/10
