Wrestling finals

With the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals set and over, there was lots to take home for MVHS. Chase and Chris Wilkerson finished their seasons by both placing 7th in the state for Mt. Vernon.

“[The arena] was crazy, and very stressful. I was super excited to be there representing MV,” said Chase Wilkerson, 12.

With an arena of eyes staring at their every move, it’s understandable to feel the pressure to perform at the highest level.

“It was important to give a strong impression for MV,” said Chase Wilkerson.

“I was very confident [coming into the match], and ready to place in state.”

With the lights bright, and the floor rumbling, confidence can be an issue. It can be hard not to overthink it.

“Before the match I normally listen to songs that are very loud and upbeat, I like listening to old XXX Tentacio,” said Chris Wilkerson, 11.

Wrestling is deeply embedded in the Wilkerson family.

“I started wrestling when I was around five years old, and my dad was the one that got me into wrestling. All the practices helped me with preparation with state. My brother also helped me a lot,” said Chase Wilkerson.

While Chris will get one more season of wrestling, Chase’s MV wrestling career is coming to a close. Chase finishes his career with 143 wins, and as MV’s all time wins leader.
