Crime around the holidays

The winter holiday season is filled with more perils than most people realize. Each year, news reports focus on crime during the holidays, leading folks to be anxious and worried.

“I do not get scared about my money getting stolen,” said Lily Phipps, 10. “My mom used to put a Christmas tree near the front window, but now we put it in the basement because I am afraid of my presents getting stolen.”

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, robbery and personal larceny are the two specific types of crime increase in December. During the last month of the year, these two crimes increase approximately 20 percent.

“I am always worried about people robbing me,” said Cadence Roy, 10.

The police guess that this increase in crimes is due to desperation, whether it be financially or emotionally. Some people look for gifts to give to family and friends for the holiday season. Police officers theorize that others may face financial difficulty as the year is ending. In addition, criminals may take advantage of the busy atmosphere of the holidays. However, there has not been extensive study made to make an accurate statement about the increase in crimes.

Despite whatever difficulties one may have during the winter months, a person should not commit property or cybercrimes. Just because one is having financial difficulties, this does not mean that criminal activity is justified. The morals of American society should be enough to prevent these sorts of crimes.

There are plenty of charitable organizations that love giving during the winter holidays. However, People do not want to admit that they are poor or struggling during the holiday season. To take advantage of these helping hands, there is a bit of swallowing one’s pride that must be done. It is morally acceptable to find help from charities during the winter holidays. People tend to be more charitable during the winter due to the Christmas spirit.

Here’s my message to the petty thieves: Please, do not. It really is not worth it.
