The Fruit Chronicles: kiwi

More stories from Cameron Baker

Hundreds of years ago, when the kiwi was first found by the western world, the explorers must have been amazed by what tasted like a sweet cross between a mango and strawberry. Nowadays, however, the kiwi is not a household fruit, yet it is not unheard of either. It falls in the area of uncommon rather than rare or commonplace. Its taste is similar to this status, quite an uncommon taste.

“They’re okay,” said Colby Johnson, 11,

I think Colby Johnson’s opinion exemplifies the true value of kiwi fruits in this globalized world.

The application of kiwis in household cooking is not very extensive. You can make them into a smoothie if you want to drink a bad smoothie. On the other hand, kiwi sorbet is a kiwi flavored ice cream that can be made out of kiwis and milk. This can help get your kids into a healthy diet, while still giving them something they love. These fruits are pretty useful for healthy eating.

The texture of the kiwi is quite rough and sturdy. Imagine a strawberry, grapefruit, or orange, and you would probably understand the texture of the kiwi. It feels rough, yet fragile. One really cool feature about the kiwi is that it has some hairy skin on the outside. This is quite an anomaly for what this may be used for, but many think that the hair keeps moist air close to the kiwi for nourishment.

Overall, I would give the kiwi three apples out of ten.
