Tasty autumn recipe

More stories from Allison Yoder

It is November, which means it is that time of year where we replace sunglasses and iced coffee with big sweaters and steaming espresso. What could pair better with those than a tasty dessert for these chilly days to come?

One of my favorite desserts to make are Oreo truffles, but with an easy twist, these can be festive along with delicious.

The ingredients needed to make these treats are one package of Oreos, Double Stuffed work best in my experience, one 8 oz pouch of cream cheese, a package of melting baker’s white chocolate, and seasonal sprinkles.

These bad boys are fairly simple to make. First, take the entire package of Oreos and use a food processor to grind them into a crumbly texture. However, if no food processor is available, stuff the cookies into a gallon size baggie, throw it on the kitchen floor, get a rolling pin, and just let out all of that pent-up rage on that innocent baggie of cookies. It works just the same as the food processor, with just a tad more arm work.

Next, open the package of cream cheese, and once it is softened, mix the cookie crumbs into the cream cheese until it forms a big chunk of oily dough. Take a spoon to this, and remove a cake-pop sized ball. Place that ball onto a cookie sheet. After breaking down the entire dough ball into smaller, condensed balls, place the cookie sheet into the freezer for at least fifteen minutes.

While the balls set up, take the melting chocolate, and place the whole package in a bowl. Microwave the chocolate for 45-second intervals until it is completely melted. Leave the bowl of chocolate sitting in the microwave until the dough is out of the freezer, so it does not begin setting up before even touching the frozen dough.

Then, once the oreo balls are set up, dunk each dough ball completely into the melted white chocolate, then set it back on the cookie sheet. I have found that using a spoon is the easiest way to accomplish this task.  Unfortunately, I have learned that it is almost impossible to avoid being a little messy during this step, so that fact might as well be accepted early on.

It should take less than a minute for each freshly dipped truffle to set up, so before it completely hardens, it is important to remember this final step. Simply take a pinch of festive sprinkles, whichever type does not matter, and set it onto the ball, slightly pressing so they stick, and do not fall off when slightly moved.

The Oreo Truffles can be served immediately, or moved into a Tupperware container, and served over the course of the next few days.

That is all there is to this recipe. It is so easy and fun to make these no-baked goods for everyone to enjoy. Just whip up some of these, and have a happy beginning to the holidays.
