Ribbons for Columbine

April 20, 2018, marked the 19th anniversary of the school shooting at Columbine High School. This day was designated as a day that students all across America could walk out of class in protest of gun laws, but, more importantly, in remembrance of the lives lost at and since the Columbine shooting.

Columbine High School posted a note on Twitter on April 11, proposing an alternative to a walkout. Their tradition has been to participate in a day of service on April 20, and they encouraged schools across the nation to do the same that day. Previously, a group of Mt. Vernon students had been planning to walk out on Friday, but the plan was changed before that took place.

The MV Current newspaper and other students at MV organized a ribbon sale for Friday the 20. The proceeds will be donated to a scholarship fund that was set up in honor of the 13 lives lost at Columbine. The ribbons were 50 cents apiece, and over 50 dollars were raised in memory of the victims of Columbine.

If you would like to make a donation, you still can do so. Email [email protected] or come to Mrs. Schiller’s room B224 during SRT.
