Super Bowl Commercials

Sydney Blankenship, MVC Staff Reporter

To me, the Super Bowl seems to be more about the commercials than the actual game. Many commercials are talked about as they air and are viewed millions of times on Youtube after the game. While I do hear about the game, I do not care about it as much as the commercials. This is for a multitude of reasons, but the biggest reason is the most important one. I want to see if any commercials address problems society has today.

Many of the commercials that have aired throughout the years are controversial for different reasons. One of the main reasons is that commercials have political undertones and people believe it is not the company’s right to show those opinions. But I find that it’s really smart for these companies to use their platform to stress the importance of issues that we sometimes ignore or avoid.

Last year, big companies such as Coca-Cola, Airbnb, and Budweiser all released commercials that celebrated ethnicity. The ads touched on how no matter where people are from, everyone belongs. It was controversial due to President Trump’s remarks on immigration and building a wall separating Mexico and the United States.

This year, however, companies shied away from political ads. Due to some backlash political Super Bowl ads got last year, companies took a lighter approach and decided to win people over with humor. While there is nothing wrong with this, but I believe this is a more time than ever to spread awareness about political issues.

Considering how controversial the President has been during his whole entire time in office, ignoring the problems when the company can absolutely make a difference is terrible. It does not matter if people do not like political commercials. It does not matter if they just want to enjoy football.

Over a hundred million people watched the Super Bowl this year. Over a hundred million people saw the commercials. All of those people could have been made more aware of the issues that we have problems today. Of course, not all of the commercials have to be serious. We can have commercials that are made just to make people smile, such as the Alexa commercial with the cameos of celebrities. The point of the matter is Super Bowl commercials are more important than the actual game to spread awareness for problems that people avoid talking about.
