“Tokyo Ghoul” is a live action movie based on the anime. It was released for a short time in the U.S. from October 16-22. I had the great chance to go and catch the movie.

Live action movies based off anime shows have never really gotten good reviews. There are some things an animated show can do that a live action movie cannot, such as including all visual effects, characters and plot points.

Prior to seeing the movie, I was already a huge fan of “Tokyo Ghoul,” watching the series multiple times and purchasing merchandise from the show. I was a little apprehensive when I first saw the trailers because it is hard to create a movie of an anime that will please every single fan.

Going into the movie, I was trying to keep an open mind. I could not judge something before I had even seen it. As the opening credits started, I was so nervous and excited I could barely keep still. This was, in fact, a horror film.

My first thought was, “Wow. They really nailed the characters.” They look similar to what they do in the anime and the acting was tasteful and insightful towards the original characters. I was pleasantly surprised. For most remakes, the acting is overdone and cringe worthy. This was the opposite case.

Of course, they could not fit two seasons into one movie. If they did, the movie would be extremely lengthy. The storyline was different and some characters were left out. But that did not make the movie worse. In fact, it was interesting to see the creativity put into the movie to make sure people were satisfied.

I was overall happy with the movie. The acting was emotional and incredibly intense. I enjoyed the movie greatly and hope that other filmmakers wanting to create live action anime movies take “Tokyo Ghoul” as a great example on how adaptations should be made.
