Oscar recap

Katie Smith, Staff Writer

The 2017 Academy Awards was one of the best Academy Awards in recent years. In my last story, I gave my predictions for each of the 24 categories and surprisingly got 16 of them correct.

The biggest surprise of the night was the one that ended up having a lot of media coverage overnight: The Best Picture mix up.

Presenter Warren Beatty was handed the envelope for Best Actress in a Leading Role rather than the Best Picture envelope, leading to La La Land being called up to receive the Best Picture award instead of the real winner, Moonlight.

After Moonlight’s win, it was revealed that this win has made Oscar history for being the first all African American cast, the first time multiple African American writers received an Oscar in the same year, the first LGBT film to win Best Picture, the first African American writer and director to win best picture, and contained the first Muslim to win Best Supporting Actor.

Other than that surprise, this year’s Academy Awards was full of humor and snacks falling from the ceiling. The funniest moment of the night was when host, Jimmy Kimmel, surprised a Hollywood tour bus with a trip to the actual awards show. Each of the tourists was able to meet some of Hollywood’s biggest stars of all time and gave the 32.9 million people watching a great laugh.

This year’s Oscars was unlike ordinary Oscars viewers have witnessed before. With constant political jokes and memorable speeches, this one will go down in history as one of the best yet.
