Green as can be

The water fountains of MVHS have been busier than ever thanks to the new water bottle filling stations.

A month ago, the MVHS Green Machine succeeded in their plan to fund water bottle filling stations at various water fountains at MVHS in order to get students to hydrate more often and encourage the use of reusable water bottles.

Mrs. Ash, one of the advisors on the Green Machine team, has seen how successful their efforts have been.

“We started selling the bottles on January 31,” said Mrs. Ash. “To date we have sold 300. So far we have kept 11,000 plastic bottles from going to the landfill where they could take up to 700 years to decompose. “

The Green Machine has also been selling water bottles during lunch and SRT for $5 each. The bottle shows the Marauder Shield, can hold up to 34 liquid ounces, and is named Marauder Water.

The upstairs water fountain in the English hallway has reached over 120,000 refills. That means that over 100,000 eight ounce disposable water bottles have been saved from ending up in landfills.

“Ever since the water bottle stations have been installed I find myself drinking a lot more water than I used to because it’s so easy to access,” said Kaesyn Herzog, 11. “I don’t have to stand in line for three minutes to not even fill up my bottle all the way, while worrying about being late to class.¨

What began as an idea became a school-wide transformation and increase of reusable water bottle usage on campus. Next time the students of MVHS pass by these stations, think of the Green Machine and their hard work and effort.
