October has come and gone, and the fall sports teams have finished their regular seasons as well as end-of-season tournaments. Now, winter sports teams look forward to their own seasons.

Some Mt. Vernon teams like the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams finished their seasons a while ago. Both teams defeated the New Palestine Dragons in Sectionals to advance to their respective championships, but were defeated in the Sectional championships by the Greenfield Central Cougars on October 8. The teams each claimed the Hoosier Heritage Conference title outright in the regular season, after having impressive seasons.

“The postseason was a giant disappointment, to say the least,” said Nick Hanson, 12. “Had we gotten out of Sectionals like we should have, not for one second do I doubt that we could have won Regionals on our home field.”

The Marauders football team went 6-3 in the regular season, winning five straight games to finish off their schedule after a rough 1-3 start. MV won its first Sectional game over the Richmond Red Devils 46-14, and then defeated a conference foe in the Pendleton Heights Arabians. The Marauders traveled to play the Delta Eagles on November 4 in the Sectional championship, where they lost 12-6, ending their season.

MV’s Lady Marauders volleyball team became Sectional champions on October 22 after defeating the New Castle Trojans in three sets. The Lady Marauders would go on to face the Cathedral Irish in Regionals, where they lost in three sets.

Looking forward to the winter sports season, the Lady Marauders basketball team has begun play. After losing former point guard Sydney Shelton, who now plays at Butler University, they’ll be looking for a new identity.

For the boys’ basketball team, they’ll have to replace the production of former point guard Miles Wayer and former power forward Michael Thompson. MV will be led by a trio of seniors in the center Erick Shepherd, forward James McCloud, and point guard Michael Ertel, who is beginning the season coming off of a torn meniscus.

It was a successful season for Mt. Vernon fall sports, and now the winter sports teams will have their own chance to leave their mark on school history.
