PLAYING basketball in P.E. or on the court against a rival team will now both earn P.E. credits.

Students now can  earn P. E. credit for participating in certain extracurricular activities. Before this year, students could not receive P. E. credit this way. We only had the option of taking two PE classes in order to receive credit. With this change, any student who has not yet taken P.E. has this new option.

The optional alternate P. E. credit activities include: the Dance Team, Marching Band, Competition Cheerleading, and any other MVHS sponsored IHSAA sanctioned sport. Students must be able to complete an entire season of the sport, from the first practice to the final event, in order to receive full credit.

Understandably, seniors, juniors, and some sophomores are upset by the fact that this was not introduced earlier, and I am a little upset as well, since so many juniors and seniors did not have this opportunity. I wish this was introduced sooner, because now it seems like the upperclassmen were cheated out of this opportunity. Though I was I never involved in sports, I think this is a nice way for the underclassmen to earn gym credit without having to fit another class in their schedule.

“I am very happy that they finally made the decision to make marching band [and other sports and activities] count as P. E. credit(s). It is always stressful [with] schedules to figure out how to get all your credits for people who are involved, and now that headache is relieved,” said Nicole Schreiner, 11.

Most freshmen seem to be relieved that they can have free space to take other classes in place of gym.

“I think it’s great. It’s a nice chance to take other classes [without]…being [overworked] from extracurricular sports,” said Jaci Dean, 9, who will be taking advantage of the P. E. alternate credit.
