On April 14th, 2024, WGI (Winter Guard International) held their final competition of the season. It was held in Dayton, Ohio, but was open to any guard around the world, as long as they were one of the top 20 guards at the preliminary competition held earlier the same day.
Many guards competed late into the night, including Mt. Vernon’s Color Guard. They performed their show, “Gravity,” at around 10:30 pm.At around 2 am, it was announced that Mt. Vernon had gotten seventh place with a score of 92.590, only 0.145 points away from sixth.Arlington High School Colorguard from New York, pictured, won the competition with a show about the famous trial of Lizzie Bordon and the scales of justice. They scored a 97.995 for their performance.On April 18th, a winter banquet was held for those who participated in Winter colorguard and Indoor Percussion. During it, Andre Williams, the guard’s director, stated that he was incredibly proud of the group. He gave out many awards to deserving students, including a legacy award to Natalie Sparks, who participated in the colorguard for eight years total and was captain for four of them. Other seniors honored included Tyler Black, Lydia Lewis and Evelyn Bitz.
