Memes have become an important part of society today. More importantly, they have become a part of the daily school life of Mt. Vernon High School. I believe memes are a good way of getting out those deep dark feelings we hide inside ourselves while being able to laugh at it.

The first thing we need to establish is what a meme is. According to dictionary.com a meme is “an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.” Popular examples of memes would be Harambe, Kermit the Frog, or my personal favorite, Obama and Biden memes.

I feel as if this school is full of people who love memes, especially the music program kids. There is even a band meme page. But do memes run out? Do they get old? Of course. Just like the news, they can get old and overused.

“I believe that memes are something that should be used in moderation,” said Jacob Chaves, 11. “Like any trend, they die out after overuse and when people who might be, ‘out of touch with the times and trends,’. When it comes to MVHS, I feel like that memes stay within little niches, but they lose their gloss under the aforementioned circumstances, such as all those little index cards with old memes scattered around the halls.”

Memes around the school are different depending on the group. The sports fans tends to lean towards sports memes, while the band kids tend to lean towards making their own memes based off of popular one.

I have passed multiple people in the hall talking about the meme, or even wearing shirts with memes on them.

In a poll sent out to the high school, it is possible to see the meme preferences of students. The majority of students enjoy memes, which is no surprise. Many people enjoy the general popular memes, not a specific kind, such as sport related. For favorite meme, the Biden and Obama bromance took the lead with 29.3%, the category of other following close behind with 20.4%. The students seem to think the band kids have the best memes. Memes from band kids were favored by with 30% of the vote, and other, non-group specific memes following at 26.7%.

Memes are a part of this high school. I think they will evolve, and only get better and better.
